Lyme Disease/West Nile Virus

Dr. Jeff Powers, DVM, has reported evidence that dogs on the Island have been exposed to Lyme Disease, which is spread by tick bites. Learn how to recognize and deal with ticks that may carry this serious disease to humans and dogs. The Beaver Island Rural Health Center has copies of Michigan Department of Community Health pamphlets and posters with photos of ticks and tips on how to protect your family and pets. As mosquito season approaches, the BIRHC also has information on the West Nile Virus. Stop by to pick up copies today.

Here is an interesting video that discusses more about the biology of Deer Ticks and the times in which both people and pets are at risk for the number of diseases that they may carry. Today we shipped over 30 ticks to the Michigan Department of Community Health to help quantify which exact species of ticks are here.
