eagles

Post by kateg »

I was reading an article in the Macomb Daily a few days ago about eagles that are in Stoney Creek Metropark by our home downstate. They recently mated and were due to lay their eggs. The workers in the park were saying how they didn't feel the eggs would survive because the eagles are unable to get grasses this year due to the deep snow. The grasses insulate the eggs when the eagles have to leave the nest for short periods of time. Due to the severe cold and deep snow, I was wondering about the island eagles. Are there any groups that monitor the eagles? Stoney Creek staff have put out hay and straw for the eagles to collect to line their nests in the hopes of saving the eggs/chicks. Don't know if that could be done on the island but thought it was a great idea.

Seems like one thing we could all do for our wildlife in general is to remove snow, as much as possible, from any south facing slope you may have, no matter how small. This way, the sun will get to the ground sooner, and therefore, plants and insects there will be available sooner.
