The Beaver Island Wildlife Club is repairing and updating our walleye raising pond in preparation for next springâ??s batch of walleye fry and we need some volunteers to assist us with the tasks.
The fence surrounding the pond needs to be lowered back to the earth level by removing the staples from the cedar poles and reinstalling. The old turtle guard fence at the base of the main fence has deteriorated and will be replaced with a 3 foot hardware cloth fastened to metal fence posts. These are the tasks.
We will start at 8:30AM on Saturday, October 13 at the pond which is located on the Fogg property on the east side of Barneyâ??s Lake Road on a two track north of the Foggâ??s driveway. We will mark the entrance.
Bring your own tools and gloves such as a hammer, fence pliers or something to pull staples and a shovel to fill in around the edges of fence and regular pliers to tie fence wire with- a fence pole driver that would also be helpful.
This is very important to the sport walleye fishery on Lake Geneserath and is a program supported by Michiganâ??s Department of Fishery. Due to our pond failures this spring we had zero walleye to stock in the lake this year. We have guidance from the state fisheries biologist on our pond improvements.
Yesterday the islandâ??s Junior Rangers helped immensely by cleaning up the empty pond. Now we need some adult help and skill please! Hope to see you there.

No walleye pond ends the walleye stocking program
Yesterday someone mentioned that they were too busy with there own "stuff" to help. That may be as the island is a busy place to live in the fall. Just so we are clear, if our walleye pond isn't repaired and put into good shape, our walleye stocking program will end. Before readers reply with comments to get the state to come over and stock, that's been requested and denied for the forseeable future.
Reminder- work at the pond tomorrow morning 10/13 8:30AM
Just a reminder. The Wildife Club needs your help tomorrow morning please to repair our walleye rearing pond or no fish next spring.
The work involves repairing our fence so bring your gloves, shovel, hammer and pliers. Many hands make work light!
