Consolidation. Who Can Vote?

Post by esteger »

Who can vote, and on what issues if any? I am a long term property owner, but only a seasonal resident.

Are you registered to vote here? If not check with your township clerk and they can help you to become registered to vote here if you would like. The only way you can vote is with being registered and you can only be registered/vote in one location so you would need to be willing to not vote at your other location. There is absentee ballots that you can apply for so if you are unable to be here to vote you can do it through the mail and your clerk can help you with that as well.

This would be a good time to seek the advice of a tax and estate attorney. This is more than changing where you're registered to vote. You are changing your primary residence also and you have to prove that you have moved your primary residence. You can't just change where you're registered to vote when theres something you want to vote on.

Homeowners with multiple homes who don't spend some time determining where their primary residence is -- and proving it -- can lose out on capital gains, income tax breaks and from a legal stand point be committing fraud.

Proceed with caution and good advise.

I agree you do want to check into it depending upon your situation and make sure the situation works best for you but it isn't that complicated to switch where you would like to vote if that is what you decide and you township clerk and/or secretary of state should be able to help you if you decide to do so.
