On this date in 1915, the SS Eastland, a cruise ship was docked in the Chicago River awaiting departure for a day cruise to South Haven, Michigan. As people boarded, they went to the port side to wave good-bye to friends and family there to see them off. The boat rolled over in the river and 844 crew and passengers lost their life. Entire families perished.

A Boylé man from Beaver Island was to have saved a good number of people in that disaster only to eventually die himself!
