Museum Director


The Beaver Island Historical Society (BIHS) is seeking a Director who is a self-starter and can manage BIHS as it transitions from its past accomplishments to the creation of a new Museum of Island Life and the development of an increasingly effective organization.

The Beaver Island Historical Society is a non-profit organization, staffed by volunteers and two part-time paid positions, the Director and an Administrative Assistant. BIHS oversight is provided by a volunteer 11 member board of trustees who provide leadership, policy, and priorities. The Museum Director reports to the BIHS Board of Trustees. BIHS operates three museums, the Print Museum, Marine Museum, and Heritage Park, and one additional property, the Protar Home.
The salary for the position is $20,000 annually. The position requires varying levels of activity at different times of the year. It is considered to be a half-time position with full-time during the summer months. In the winter months, BIHS activities can be done from the Directorâ??s home.

Summary of Position
1. Management Responsibility: Manage day-to-day operations of the museums and the museum collections. Tasks:
Provide oversight of the budget
Coordinate Museum week and other events
Assist the Board with long range planning
Attend all BIHS Board of Trustees meetings
Communicate with board members regarding progress and challenges toward meeting goals
Implement policies of the Board
Promote BIHS within the community
Assist in fundraising activities
Research and pursue grant writing
Develop strategies for off-season activities
Comply with all state and federal filings

2. Qualifications:

Education and Experience
Management and supervisory experience
Computer skills

Desired Personal Qualifications
A passion for history
Full time residency or seasonal residency on Beaver Island (Minimum: May to October island residency; Available to work throughout the year and call-in to board meetings during the winter; maintain office hours during the summer)
Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to work independently, a self-starter
High levels of organization skills
Ability to plan strategically
Ability to plan events
Ability to communicate, set, and meet goals
