Thank You Road Crew

Post by Pam Grassmick »

Kudos to our road crew for well maintained roads and mowing the area with invasive Wild Parsnips along McCauley Road before the plant went to seed and spread. During the June 28th and 29th Invasive Species Conference held at the Community Center, we saw photos and heard from those who had experienced the nasty photosensitivity burns to their skin when being exposed to the sap. I'm glad that the County Road Commission sent a road crew representative to this meeting. The crew is an important partner in early detection of invasive species.

Another area that the road crew has not mowed is toward the south end where Japanese Knotweed is growing along the road way. A sign with information has been posted at the site. By not mowing this particular plant, it will be treated in September. Mowing spreads the plant pieces and new sprouts can form from the cut pieces. For more information about these two plants, please visit: www.beaverislandassociation.org and click on invasive species.
