Forest Health Survey

Post by Pam Grassmick »

Thanks to the BICS students and community members who attended the Forest Health presentation given by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. A special thanks to Mr. Riley Justice and Mr. Rob Groesbeck, Science Teacher, who facilitated the training and field trip. A great day on many levels. Beaver Island is the first community to assist in a Hemlock Woolly Adelgid survey. Perhaps, one of the students will be interested in pursuing a natural resources' career? Joe Moore videoed the presentations and these can be found on News on the Net.

For those individuals and students who took Forest Health Survey Forms with them, we would like to mail these back to the State of Michigan on November 1st for processing. Collection points will be with Mr. Groesbeck at the BICS and the Community Center.

The Beaver Island Association-www.beaverislandassociation.org- has placed the forest health information on their website. Scroll to the 3rd tab labeled Invasives and the first sub tab will be Forest Health.

The MDNR will be including this event in the Forest Division's Annual Report to be released later this year. Congratulations, Beaver Island, and thanks again! =D>

Last call for HWA surveys.

The Forestry Division intends to do an aerial survey in 2015 to further check the island's forest health. The DNR has surveyed millions of acres using this method but they have never surveyed Beaver Island. The resent HWA survey is intended to pick up disease early. The absence of disease is also of interest. Thanks for your help.
