A Thanks From the Pelagic Group
Despite the inclement weather, the pelagic group departed with smiles. Nearly 40 birders from various states visited the island on Saturday and Sunday. The event was sold out quickly showing the enthusiasm of birders for the island. They traveled aboard the Emerald Isle observing migrating sea birds returning south from their arctic nesting grounds. The group's crossing and island birding was supported by expert field guides-Brian Allen and Darrell Lawson. The Pelagic group would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the business' and community members who made their trip memorable. A special thanks to the BI Boat Company for providing a warm welcome to the birders, scheduling the tour of Beaver Island and John Fiegen who monitored and transported the group on Sunday morning to Gull Harbor for further birding. The Community Center was their port in a storm. They loved the welcoming birder signs. The thanks extends to the BIHS board who opened the Print Shop and the Marine Museum. Accommodations at the motels were comfortable and the food provided by Stoney Acres, Shamrock, Beaver Lodge, and Dalwhinnies were excellent. We thank all the business' for their support. BIA provided the funding for the Sunday morning field trip. This was a wonderful event that showcased the island's birding opportunities during the shoulder season. Those involved were enthusiastic and anxious to come back. We are exploring opportunities to make the island more widely known as a birding destination. Today's note from a Pelagic Trip Participant:
Darrell and Brian,
A big thank you to both of you for spearheading the pelagic trip to Beaver Island. The weather did not cooperate but most birders are a pretty resilient lot and remain optimistic . I thought it was a really nice group of folks and enjoyed making many new acquaintances. I would definitely do this adventure again as would my non-birder wife. Thanks again for your guiding and planning . Life is good!
