Smooth Green Snakes

Post by Pam Grassmick »

Herpetologists visiting the islands over the next 10 days are asking for assistance with locating smooth green snakes for a genetic's research project. Please do not kill this snake-they only need a few scales. You can contact David Mitsfud with your smooth green snake sighting at 313-268-6189.

Smooth green snakes are the only snakes in eastern North America that are entirely bright green on their upper surfaces. This coloration camouflages them well in their grassy habitats. The head is slightly wider than the neck and is green above and white below. The belly is white to pale yellow. None of Beaver Island's snakes are venomous.

Thank you for your assistance.
