Jack passed away at McLaren Hospital in Petoskey yesterday. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

CHARLEVOIX â?? John H. â??Jackâ?￾ Coppens, 94, of Charlevoix, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014, at McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey. He was born Oct. 12, 1919, in Frankfort, to Solomon and Gertrude (Dorsey) Coppens.

Jack graduated from Empire High School.

On Aug. 14, 1943, he married Mae Gallagher in Pontiac.

In 1967 Jack retired from the U.S. Coast Guard as Chief Warrant Officer after 30 years of service.

He is survived by his children, John E. (Jackie) Coppens, of Sugarland, Texas, Suzanne Carlson, of Charlevoix, Marianne Coppens, of Charlevoix, and Cheryl (Randal) Chism, of Traverse City; grandchildren, Suzanne, John, Michael, Erin, Robert, John and Christopher; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice Diggins, of Empire, and Barbara Vogel, of Suttons Bay; and many nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Mae; sister, Dorothy; and brothers, Robert and James.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 14, at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix, where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Saint Maryâ??s Church in Charlevoix. Burial will be in St. Maryâ??s Cemetery in Charlevoix.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charlevoix Area Hospital.

Jack was a great friend. Lots of stories about BI and his Coast Guard days here. He'll be greatly missed by all his drinking buddies at Kelsey B's. RIP Jack.
