Hunting on conservancy property

Post by Terry Frysinger »

Little Traverse Conservancy just announced the donation of 173 acres to the Barney's Lake Nature Preserve from the Scully family. Will hunters be banned from this property? If yes, who makes this decision.

Here is the response I got from an email to the conservancy:

The 173 acre Scully Property, which will become part of LTCâ??s Barneyâ??s Lake Nature Preserve, will not be open for hunting.

Every new LTC nature preserve is evaluated for its suitability for hunting based on a set of 12 guidelines weâ??ve developed, and the hunting status is then determined by our Stewardship Committee (a committee comprised largely by LTC Board Members). In 2012, 47 preserves totaling almost 8,000 acres (more than half of Preserve acreage) were open to hunting. The list of preserves open to hunting can be found on our website.

Although the size of the Scully property and its location in a generally undeveloped and forested region seems to indicate it would be suitable for at least some types of hunting (such as archery or waterfowl), donor wishes are also one of the criteria and are given careful consideration. In this case the donors are opposed to allowing hunting on this property. The fact that a nearly 3/4 mile-long private drive bisects the Preserve was also an important factor against allowing hunting. At the meeting on January 24th, LTCâ??s Stewardship Committee determined that the property would be closed to hunting.

LTC staff will be further assessing the features of this new preserve property, and planning for trails and better access later this year. In the meantime, the property is open for uses such as:

· Non-motorized travel such as hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
· Harvesting of wild fruits like berries, nuts, or mushrooms
· Other uses such as wildlife observation, photography, dog walking (although dogs must be leashed), etc.
· Fishing.

Besides hunting, prohibited activities on the Barneyâ??s Lake Preserve include:

â?¢ Motorized vehicles of any kind
â?¢ Camping
â?¢ Fires
â?¢ Creation of unauthorized trails
â?¢ Dumping of trash or yard waste
â?¢ Cutting of trees
â?¢ Removal of plants
â?¢ Salvaging firewood, including fallen deadwood

Please let me know if you have any other questions about the Scully addition to the Barneyâ??s lake Preserve.

Sincerely,

Doug Fuller
