Health Fair UPDATE Friday, September 28th 1-6pm!

Post by CVX Commission on Aging »

Join us on Friday, September 28th, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Beaver Island Community School for our Health and Human Services Fair.

There will be many on-island and off-island organizations present to offer information that can benefit you financially, emotionally, and physically.

The informative afternoon will also feature presentations, speakers, and demonstrations. Join Dr. Brad Grassmick from 2-3:00 p.m. as he explores the heart and healthy habits with BI Community School students. A dissection of an elk heart will take place as well as demonstrations of EKGs, and the effects of diet and exercise. Useful information for all ages!

Representatives will be available to answer questions. Stop by just after lunch, when you pick your students up after school, or right before dinner. There will be something helpful and interesting there for everyone!

Stay tuned for more details!

Beaver Island Health and Human Services Fair Update!

The BI Community School 5th- thru 12th-Grade Students will be participating in a "Health and Human Services Fair Information Hunt" on Friday, September 28th from 1-6pm!

Join them and see if you can answer these questions!

  • How and how long should you wash your hands for "healthy" purposes?

What is a disease that animals can transmit to humans called?

What kind of "gun" does the Beaver Island EMS carry in its equipment?

The BI Fire Department and BIEMS will have mobile rigs available for touring on-site at the BI Community School, plus Island Airways will have the new Emergency Air Transport available at Island Airways for touring from 2-5pm. Charlevoix County Transit System Shuttles will be available starting at 2pm for those who wish to be transported from the school to Island Airways and back. A great opportunity to see and learn about our Island's Emergency preparedness!

NEXT UPDATE: the Health Fair is GREAT--even for the Family Pet!
Statistics prove our "furry friends" help keep us happy--and healthy. Find valuable information on doing the same for them!

Beaver Island Health and Human Services Fair Update!

The BI Community School 5th- thru 12th-Grade Students will be participating in a "Information Hunt" at the Health and Human Services Fair on Friday, September 28th, 1-6pm!

Join them and see if you can answer these questions!

  • What Beaver Islander could get you started in ordering bulk organic foods?

What Federal organization has as part of its aim to "improve the economic and environmental climate in rural communities"?

What is the most common cause of fires on Beaver Island?

What does "RSVP" stand for at this fair?

Studies have proven that pets not only enhance our well-being but can actually help improve our health and help us live longer! So keeping your pet healthy and happy helps keep you healthy and happy!

Andy Kohls of Andy's Grooming & Boarding Barn will be on hand to advise on daily diet, exercise, obedience, grooming and regular "maintenance" needs for a healthy pet.

Jacque LaFreniere, Canine Massage Therapist, will demonstrate some canine massage techniques, as well as discuss the variety of benefits of canine massage therapy.

NEXT UPDATE: the Health Fair is for mind, body and spirit! The state-of-mind is connected to the state-of-body, well like the leg bone's connected to the hip bone! Find out information on brain health, relaxation, meditation, pain relief, and more.

  • How many families does the BI Food Pantry serve in a year?

  • How many two-bedroom units does Forest View Senior Housing have?

Non-fasting cholesterol screenings (no need to worry about that picnic lunch!) and bone density testing will be available on-site.

NEXT UP: The Health and Human Services Fair arrives! Join us for an engaging afternoon of information, education, fun and prizes! Cookbooks, tote bags, first aid kit, $50 gift cards, laptop cooler, automatic blood pressure monitor, stuffed animals and more!
