US 31 in Charlevoix...BE PREPARED!
CHARLEVOIX â?? Southbound drivers on U.S. 31 coming through Charlevoix will see a major detour beginning Monday, June 13.
The road closure is part of the Charlevoix infrastructure project that is currently taking place on St. Marys Drive.
â??This will be a complete closure of the southbound lanes compared to the lane shifts we did for Wood and Green streets,â? said Department of Public Works superintendent Pat Elliott.
Motorists are also reminded that State Street remains closed between Upright and Carpenter streets, to complete water main re-construction.
The lane closures will allow construction crews to connect the sanitary sewer lines on St. Marys Drive to the line under U.S. 31, which is nearly under the centerline, Elliott said.
â??The sewer line is farther out under the roadway than the previous connections crews made with Grant and Wood streets,â? Elliott said.
The detour will divert U.S. 31 southbound traffic onto Garfield Avenue to Grant Street. From Grant Street, motorists will travel to Carpenter Street and follow that street east back to U.S. 31, Elliott said.
The construction also will affect the northbound traffic on U.S. 31. From Carpenter Street to Garfield Avenue, motorists traveling north on the roadway will be shifted from two lanes to a single lane.
The lane closures and traffic diversion is expected to last until Friday, June 17.
City officials want motorists to know they are doing what they can to limit the impact on travel.
â??We have worked with construction crews to have this portion of the project done at once to limit the impact on motorists,â? said city manager Mark Heydlauff. â??The goal is to have the lanes open by the weekend. Once this portion of the project is complete we are pretty close to finishing the work on those streets.â?
