Flags to be Flown Half-Staff Monday, June 7

LANSING â?? Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today ordered United States flags throughout the state of Michigan and on Michigan waters lowered for one day Monday, June 7, 2010, in honor of Marine Lance Corporal Anthony A. DiLisio who died in Helmand province, Afghanistan, while on active duty supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Flags should be returned to full-staff Tuesday, June 8.

Lance Cpl. DiLisio, age 20, died May 30 of wounds suffered while supporting combat operations. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Lance Cpl. DiLisioâ??s family has requested that flags be lowered on Monday, June 7, the day of his funeral service at St. Paul of Tarsus Catholic Church in Clinton Township. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery.

Under Section 7 of Chapter 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code, 4 USC 7, Governor Granholm, in December 2003, issued a proclamation requiring United States flags lowered to half-staff throughout the state of Michigan and on Michigan waters to honor Michigan servicemen and servicewomen killed in the line of duty. Procedures for flag lowering were detailed by Governor Granholm in Executive Order 2006-10 and included in federal law under the Army Specialist Joseph P. Micks Federal Flag Code Amendment Act of 2007 (Public Law 110-41).
When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the United States flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.

When a member of the armed services from Michigan is killed in action, the governor will issue a press release with information about the individual(s) and the day that has been designated for flags to be lowered in his or her honor. The information will also be posted on Governor Granholmâ??s Website at www.michigan.gov/gov in the section titled â??Spotlight.â?￾

Flags to be lowered to half mast for Memorial Day

Governor Granholm Encourages Citizens to Remember Fallen Heroes on Memorial Day

Orders flags lowered to half-staff until noon on May 31

LANSING â?? Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today encouraged the citizens of Michigan to remember the meaning and importance of Memorial Day by honoring those members of the armed forces from our state and across the country who have given their lives in defending democracy and freedom. In recognition of their selfless sacrifices, the governor has ordered United States flags lowered Monday until noon.

â??Memorial Day brings the nation together to pay tribute to our noble fellow Americans in uniform who died so that we may live in a country where freedom and liberty reign,â?￾ Granholm said. â??It is a tremendous privilege to salute these courageous heroes who gave so much to our state and nation.â?￾

The governor urged all Michigan residents to pause on this day of remembrance to recognize and honor those who fought for and defended our right to freedom and to ensure that the purpose for which they fought will not be forgotten.

The governor directed flags flown at half-staff and half mast Monday, May 31, under Section 7 of Chapter 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code, which states that on Memorial Day, United States flags are to be displayed at half-staff by hoisting the flag to the peak for an instant and then lowering the flag to half-staff until noon only, when the flags should be raised to the top of the staff.
