There is a product called "Rain Drops" which acts as a water softener available at the grocery store. I haven't had the problem of stained whites since I started adding it to my laundry.

The sad truth is that these habitat specific plants grow where they do for a reason. Often times, if they are moved, they will not survive in their new location. Maybe there's still time to put them back?
