WEST SHORE finds a new home

The M/V West Shore, sister ship to the mighty SOUTH SHORE, has found a new home in the Straits of Mackinac. Star Line Ferry has purchased her from Bay City Boat Lines, where plans were made to run her on tours of the Saginaw River along side her other sister ship, the former Wm Miller. Plans fell th...

To be clear, this is the Islander's 50th season, but she did not arrive until July 27th at St. James, and made her maiden voyage to Charlevoix, arriving at 8AM July 28th. Her christening was August 5th, I believe.

49th anniversary of the Beaver Islander's maiden voyage!

The motor vessel BEAVER ISLANDER completed her maiden voyage to Charlevoix in 1962. At the time, she was the largest, fastest, and most advanced ship built for the run. She served as the flagship for 37 years, a record, until the EMERALD ISLE arrived in 1997.

I had the best ride to Beaver Island aboard her. A cozy, smooth riding boat. On a Miller Boat Line forum (her original owners), the people of Put-In-Bay remember her well and have many fond stories and pictures of her. I'll post some pictures of her location in Chicago along with some pictures of he...

Raise a toast to the South Shore!

SOUTH SHORE just may be the most Irish boat of them all. Launched on St. Patrick's Day in 1945, the boat was destined to call Beaver Island home. She was built to make a 30 minute run between Sandusky and Put-In-Bay Ohio. When the Miller Boat Line built their open deck ferries, South Shore was sold ...

The BGSU site is notoriously incorrect/incomplete on info. Mary Margaret started out as a "fruit boat", like the "North Shore" did. She was not much of a looker, but Allers fixed her up, including an upper deck cabin and new pilot house. The lower deck was enclosed more as well. ...

64 years young!

My annual tip of the hat to the "Daughter of Saint Patrick" - the South Shore! Launched March 17th, 1945 at Stadium Boat Works Ohio, she was destined to serve the Emerald Isle! A salute to her and her crews over the years for such wonderful service. Recent pictures of her in the photo gall...

1951 indeed - had my date off. Do share those whom you do know. I've picked out my great-uncle James Gallagher and I believe Jewell Gillespie. Also- who would have been running the North Shore at the time?

Pictures of ferry "NORTH SHORE" in Gallery

I'm uploading a set of pictures from Life Magazine. A story was done on taking horses over on the "North Shore", summer of 1953. If you can help identify who people are in the pictures or remember the occassion, please do so!

Beaver Islander anniversary

Forty-six years ago today, 8/5/1962, the "Beaver Islander" completed her maiden voyage from Beaver Island to Charlevoix. Congratulations to her and those who have served aboard her over these years!
